Meet Scarlett
At 17 months old, Scarlett faced a life-threatening E. coli infection that left her on the brink of death. Her kidneys were failing and she was partially paralyzed; doctors predicted a grim outcome, saying she would never walk again. Not giving up hope, Scarlett's parents turned to caregivers at Children's Hospital New Orleans, where she made a miraculous recovery. Slowly and steadily, Scarlett regained her strength and re-learned how to move her limbs, walk on her own, and swallow. She defied the odds. Seventy-six days after that life-threatening infection took hold, Scarlett strode out of the children's hospital on her own. She's now running, jumping, and soaring on her scooter to keep up with her big sister.
