McKenzie's journey began at just one month old when she became critically ill and was transferred by ambulance to MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children's Hospital (MHBBCH). Diagnosed with Infantile Pompe Disease, a rare genetic disorder, McKenzie's life became a series of hospital visits, needle pokes, and surgeries. But at MHBBCH, she found more than just medical treatment. The Child Life team provided a haven of normalcy, allowing McKenzie to simply be a kid amidst the challenges. Thanks to a surgically implanted port, McKenzie now receives weekly therapies at home, reducing hospital stays and empowering her to live an active life filled with outdoor adventures and cherished moments with her cat, Mistletoe.
