Published on December 5, 2017

Meet three teens that have been treated at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals who have inspired us with their positive attitudes while under-going treatment. Now through January 2, #ShareaCoke and create a customized bottle for someone who inspires you. $1 from every holiday bottle purchased will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

 Amy

Keeping a positive attitude in the face of multiple diagnoses is one way teenage Amy shows resilience. CMN Hospitals donations provided Amy access to the Beads of Courage program, which helped her to track the milestones of her treatment and talk about what she was experiencing with friends and family.

Isaiah

While Isaiah might look a little different, others quickly learn he’s like any other teen. His bright personality and cheerful smile can light up a room with a single expression.CMN Hospitals donations support the Hope Fund which helps launch critical new programs, purchase essential equipment, conduct cutting-edge research, provide charitable care, and do much more for kids like Isaiah.

Olivia

Despite needing life-long care, Olivia’s prognosis is great. She responds well to treatments and lives an active life with a smile and a positive spirit. CMN Hospitals donations have supported the hospital’s cardiac services, which benefited Olivia. Her family and doctors believe she would not be alive today without the services and medical advancements achieved through cardiac research to improve post-surgery implications, all made possible through contributions.

2017 newest Miracle Million Club members! Let’s give a virtual round of applause for the following:

The Entravision Radiothon event was a huge success thanks to a multi-platform coast-to-coast effort. This Radiothon is the largest Hispanic syndicated programming event; broadcast on three networks plus local programming in over 100 markets.  A digital push employed a dedicated website supported by social and mobile media, a continuous live stream of celebrity and patient interviews, stats and radiothon updates during all three days of the event.

The main donation driver included Entravision’s phenomenal talent lineup; from Alex El Genio Lucas and Armida y La Flaka on their “Jose” network to Erazno y La Chokolata, Carla “La Plebe” Soto & Piolin on the Tricolor network. They also added La Suavecita FM in Los Angeles with the support of Myra Berenice, The LM Show and Lupita Del Castillo.

All came together to set a new record and a new standard for our media events raising over 3.2 million dollars for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and ensuring our local hospitals continue to serve the children in their local communities.

Thanks to Giant and Our Family Foundation for their 2017 fundraising efforts.  Giant ran two campaigns this year in 170 stores, a summer balloon campaign raising over $658,525 and a fall candle campaign in November raising over $675,000. Those fundraisers, along with Foundation donations brought their annual total to $1.7 million.

Team Rooster Teeth, led by the fearless Jack Pattillo and Caiti Ward, hosted their 7th Extra Life marathon. Broadcasting their event, and raising donations through antics and crazy shenanigans, this single Extra Life team raised over $1 million #ForTheKids: HERE

For the past 20 years, brave children and their families have shared their often triumphant, sometimes heartbreaking stories with you during WKLH’s Miracle Marathon for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

The 18th annual Eric and Kathy’s Kids event for Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago culminated on Friday with 9 WTMX “The Mix” posting another impressive total. The final tally of $1,001, 556 will help kids in the Chicago area and around the world, have healthier and brighter futures.

“The Mix” featured a daily “Eric and Kathy Kid of the Day” Monday through Thursday. WTMX took donations throughout each day in honor of that days featured Kid.  The Eric and Kathy morning show capped off the week of fundraising with a live broadcast from Lurie Children’s Hospital on Friday morning from 6-10am. Hundreds of volunteers were on hand, as thousands of Mix listeners responded to heroic stories of Lurie kids and their families with generous donations.

A Gamer Helps Kids Like Her Son Through Extra Life

First-year Extra Life participant Nicole Ryan can’t imagine where her son Jacob would be today without the help of Boston Children’s Hospital, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

Jacob is a 7-year-old boy in second grade who loves his service poodle, trains, bridges, tunnels and his iPad. He is funny, loving, curious, open-hearted, caring, sweet, sassy, challenging. He also happens to be autistic.

Two years ago her formerly cheerful and sweet boy had suddenly turned anything but. Outbursts became a daily occurrence, some of them violent and deeply scary. A particularly violent episode one day left Nicole calling 911 for an ambulance. At her request, they took her to Boston Children’s Hospital.

“The team at BCH carefully discussed options with us, ruled out physical illnesses, involved every appropriate service that could help him and guide with compassion and clarity. My son, just 5 years old at the time, needed psychiatric hospitalization. They stood by and found a bed for him in an appropriate unit elsewhere and made sure that as his parents, we understood what this would mean and what to expect,” says Nicole.

Jacob spent two weeks in a pediatric psychiatric unit that specializes in children with cognitive disorders like autism. He was diagnosed with a co-morbid condition called disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). Treatment began and continued when he came home.

“It was like seeing my son anew all over again when he came home. His smile returned. His loving nature shone like a star. He found his words again and has had ever so much to tell us since.”

Mental health issues and mental illness, especially in children, is an important issue in the gaming community. Nicole joined Extra Life as a way to give back to the hospital who helped her, as well as help other families who need support and services to local families.

Through her love of gaming, Nicole and 50,000 others like her play games and raise funds for their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Extra Life is a year-long fundraising program. Participants choose how and when they want to play games, and ask friends and family to donate to their efforts. All funds stay local to benefit local kids like Jacob.

It’s a milestone year for REMAX of Michigan as they celebrate their 25th year of fundraising with Children’s Miracle Network and nearly $2 million donated to local CMN Hospitals!

“We are extremely pround of our partnership with CMN Hospitals and the amazing success of our Region over the last 25 years,” remarked Elda O’Brien, Regional Co-Owner of REMAX of Michigan. “Throughout our history, REMAX of Michigan Associates have always played a vital role in giving back to the local community and there is no better example of ‘people helping people’ than what we have done through the CMN program.”

The commitment of the REMAX family to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals demonstrates “the power of many makes a difference.” That is the true secret behind the REMAX relationship with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The individual donations of hundreds of Associates amount to millions of dollars each year for children’s hospitals, with $1,938,972.68 raised to date by REMAX of Michigan Associates since 1992.

“REMAX of Michigan Associates have always been among the most generous and largest contributors to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals,” said Angela Kendall, Area Director for the Central Area. “Reaching the $2 million milestone is an incredible accomplishment and a true testament to the kindness, success, and dedication of these Agents. You have truly made millions of miracles happen for hospitalized kids in Michigan. Thank you!”

The most effective fundraising tools are the Miracle Home® and Miracle Property programs, where Associates can make a contribution to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals with each closed transaction. Miracle Home yard signs also serve as an indicator of the agent’s commitment to improving local pediatric care. Many REMAX of Michigan offices are so passionate about the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ mission that they go above and beyond. From organizing golf tournaments to hosting art auctions, their efforts prove the simple principle that actions speak louder than words.

Donations stay local to fund critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment, and charitable care. The Region’s legacy of giving and compassion over the last 25 years will ensure that all children in need of care will have it now and they’re continued support will continue to help kids well into the future.

MARRIOTT GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES $122,841 FOR RADY CHILDREN’S

Published on November 20, 2017

The San Diego Marriott Business Council recently presented a check to Rady Children’s Hospital for $122,841 representing funds raised during their 21st Annual Champions for Rady Children’s Golf Tournament on June 5 at Maderas Golf Club.

Each year, the tournament brings together sponsors, donors, golfers and hosts for a day of golf, a dinner program and a silent auction. Among the sponsors of this event were Schindler Elevator Co., Magic Laundry Service, relaxx Dry Cleaning, PSAV, TownePark, Radiant, KONE, GES, and fellow CMNH partner, Panda Express.

Golfers at the tournament had the unique opportunity to interact first-hand with the miracles that happen every day at Rady Children’s.  Throughout the day, they had a few special VIPs (Very Important Patients) and their families visit the tournament. The strength demonstrated by the patients and their families served as an inspiration to players and volunteers alike, and proved to be the true reward of the day for all involved.

The San Diego Marriott Business Council is comprised of hotel leaders from Marriott Managed and Marriott Franchised hotels as well as Marriott Vacations Worldwide.  This year, they were joined by leaders from the Starwood community following their merge. Throughout the year, many Marriott locations in San Diego host events at the various hotel properties. The annual golf tournament has consistently been the biggest event of the year, and 2017 proved to be no different. Following the conclusion of the tournament, Marriott surpassed the 2-million-dollar mark for total giving to Rady Children’s Hospital! We are so grateful for Marriott’s continued support of Rady Children’s patients and their families.

Save the Date for the 2018 tournament which will take place on Monday, May 7, 2018 at Maderas Golf Club in Poway, California.

Washington University in St. Louis Dance Marathon Raised More Than $121,449 for Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis

Participants danced, played with inflatables such as 3 Man Bungee run, danced with their Chancellor, watched student performances, hung out with miracle families, and were fed. Every hour had a different theme and the music matched with the theme. They viewed videos and heard from people who were directly impacted by Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St Louis.  Participants also took multiple pictures in our photo booth and by our large, wooden, painted “FTK” letters and also our performance groups.

There was a family room where the families were able to go if they felt overwhelmed by the crowd of dancers. Snacks and games were available for children and their families in the room. Students  liaisons were assigned for each of the families. They shared their stories with our dancers.

They are truly a one of a kind event at Washington University, and are one of two that directly benefits Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St Louis. There are students who attend WashU who have been in the hospital in their past, know someone who has been, or are knowledgeable about the hospital itself.  This is a hospital that provides service to so many people and we are honored to support them. Thank you Love’s Travel Stops for supporting this Dance Marathon.

St. Norbert College Dance Marathon Raised More Than $76,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin – Milwaukee

Published on November 15, 2017

Paraphrased from Public Relations Coordinator for St. Norbert Dance Marathon, Micayla Meyers

On November 11th, St Norbert College Dance Marathon had their 5th Annual “Miracle Day”. They were thrilled to have 200 dancer participants in attendance for the big day! During the 13.1 hour event, their dancers were able to experience different themed hours with crafts and games. Some favorites were Disney Hour that included a lip sync competition and temporary tattoos, and also Power Hour where everyone rocked out to popular music mashups with glow sticks and finger lights!  While all of the events of the day were fun, the most important part of Miracle Day was of course the 14 wonderful Miracle Families who shared their stories of how they have been impacted by the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Dancers got a chance to make bandannas with the names of the families and take pictures with the family after each Family Talk. The families also got to enjoy a special Families Room for them, complete with a ball pit! Additionally, we created a Reflection Room where the dancers could go to read families stories, write notes to Miracle Kids, and engage in some peaceful reflection.

Celebration Hour, sponsored by Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores, was the most impactful hour for their dancers that allowed them to connect deeper to the cause and why they dance for the kids. They celebrated their Miracle Families during this hour as they ran on stage across a red carpet and the participants thanked them for all that they do. The participants also had the opportunity to form a circle around a “chain of hope” on which they had written names of Miracle Kids and reasons why they dance. They then took a moment to remember all of the Miracle Kids who fought a hard battle but unfortunately have passed away. This was a very emotional time for everyone as stood as one listening to the song “Angel’s Among Us” and remembered all of the Miracle Kids. Additionally, during Celebration Hour they heard an update on one of their Miracle Kids, Mitch, who was cancer free at their event last year but relapsed this summer. In honor of Mitch they called their dancers to action and challenged everyone to collectively raise $9,400 within the hour in honor of the 94 nights Mitch has spent in the hospital since June. Dancers stood together on one side of the room and made at least 10 calls to family and friends asking directly for donations. This was incredibly inspiring to see the dancers rally around this cause and get excited when they raised $1,000 within the first five minutes of starting these calls and from this moment on during their Miracle Day their fundraising numbers increased dramatically.

Thanks to the help and support of Love’s they exceeded their $70,000 goal with flying colors, raising a grand total of $76,754.05 for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin – Milwaukee! With Love’s sponsorship of their event, they were able to create a Dance Marathon experience for their participants that was unlike any other. A small campus in the city of De Pere was able to raise enough money to affect the lives of thousands of kids at the Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Their organization is small but mighty, and Love’s sponsorship has allowed them to accomplish a goal beyond their wildest dreams.

Helping Kids with Extra Life

Published on November 6, 2017

Laura Andrews couldn’t help but get sucked into Extra Life. Her love of gaming influenced her decision to name her daughters Zelda, and Alleria, from World of Warcraft.

At the time of her recruitment from a friend and Kansas City Extra Life guild member, Lora, Andrews was working with her local hospitals on helping Alleria, who was born with three holes in heart.

“Other than the fact that she wouldn’t sleep, she seemed just like a normal baby for the first couple weeks,” says Andrews. “It got worse, she started screaming and suffered weight loss. She was failing to thrive. Four weeks after she was born the doctors knew this was a problem. I won’t lie for a while I couldn’t take pictures. I didn’t want to remember how thin she was. Her chest would sink in as she was breathing, she had to be at an incline to sleep, and she cried non-stop.”

Devastated, Andrews sought treatment from her local children’s hospital who helped guide her to help Alleria gain weight in preparation for the best possible procedure.

“I can’t imagine what my life would be like without the people and the doctors who supported me during this time. So when I learned of Extra Life I needed to be a part of this. My child might not have been seen at a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital but that does not matter. What matters is giving back so that the love and care that my family got will reach those families who need it. I am part of the Kansas City Guild and I play for children just like mine at KU Pediatrics.”

Extra Life is a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising program within the gaming community. Over 50,000 Twitch content creators and casual gamers unite yearly to join the charity gaming event. More than $30 million has been raised since 2008 through Extra Life. Funds have stayed local to benefit the local CMN Hospital in each individual gamers community.
