Costco Employee Gives Back After Terminal Diagnosis

KTVU –

A photo caption from an ABC 7 article about Arlie Smith, a Costco employee from Danville, Calif. reads: “Fans of a cancer-stricken Costco worker surprised him Tuesday with money they raised for him and his wife, which he plans on donating to the Children’s Hospital of Oakland.”

Arlie Smith has worked at the Danville warehouse location for 21 years. He is affectionately known by customers as the “Costco Guy” as he often checks receipts and is the first and last person shoppers engage with at the store.

Arlie is an active fundraiser during Costco’s seasonal campaigns for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and was one of the top fundraisers in North American during the store’s 2014 fundraising campaign.

He has recently made headlines for being exceptionally giving. Diagnosed with terminal bone cancer last September, Arlie was told he may have just two years to live – but he hasn’t let that stop him from sharing a little sunshine. He is vying to be the top fundraiser for the upcoming Costco campaign in May. You can support him by donating to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals here.

Thank you, Arlie for your continued support and dedication to helping save and improve the lives of sick and injured kids – your generosity inspires us.

It’s the Month of Miracles! REMAX agents are working hard all year to sell Miracle Homes, making a donation to kids in need at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals with every closed transaction. But what are these agent’s stories? Stay tuned for our Month of Miracles Miniseries of inspiring REMAX agents.

Nancy Allen is raising funds for to her niece being treated at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Foundation.

Ottawa REMAX agent Nancy’s niece Kelsey was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 2 ½ years old and spent much of her childhood at Children’s Hospital Eastern Ontario, a Children’s Miracle Network hospital.

Nancy and Kelsey CHEO

Nancy with niece Kelsey

When Nancy visited her niece when Kelsey was just 3 years old, the young girl was sitting on the nurses’ station right in the thick of things, at the nurse’s busiest time. The nurses patiently let her play with the phone and paperwork, giving her so much attention that the transition to another hospital was difficult because of the strong connections Kelsey had made at CHEO.

The now 23-year-old is inspirational, courageous, confident young woman, which aunt Nancy attributes largely to the staff and friends at CHEO.

Kelsey spends her time helping other children cope with their illnesses and participates with Nancy in many Children’s Miracle Network fundraisers throughout the year, including enjoying a Blizzard Treat at Dairy Queen on Miracle Treat Day.

The funds that REMAX agents like Nancy raise each year through the Miracle Homes program is critical to provide needed pediatric care for sick and injured kids in your community, neighborhood and even family. Thank you to Nancy and our friends at REMAX for your dedicated support!

Cliff King is raising funds for Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba in Winnipeg, British Columbia, in honor of his daughter’s legacy.

When Winnipeg agent Cliff King joined REMAX, he immediately jumped aboard the company’s involvement with Children’s Miracle Network in Canada. Little did Cliff know that just months later those Miracle Homes he was selling would be helping to support the medical needs of his own daughter.

Kelsey 053

Kelsey, left, made fantastic relationships with caregivers at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

At age 16, Cliff’s daughter Kelsey was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma and spent many weeks at her local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba in Winnipeg, British Columbia and the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. The caregivers in the Winnipeg CK5 ward soon became like a second family to the Kings. For the next 2.5 years, Kelsey underwent chemotherapy, radiation, blood transfusions and surgeries to try and defeat the cancer and prolong her life until she succumbed to the disease at home just one day prior to her 19th birthday.

Since his daughter passed away, Cliff has dedicated his free time to volunteering at the Children’s Miracle Network Radiothon every year and raising funds for Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba in honor of Kelsey. Even his son Scott, also now a REMAX realtor, has joined his dad in manning the phones.

The funds that REMAX agents like Cliff raise each year through the Miracle Homes program is critical to provide needed pediatric care for sick and injured kids in your community, neighborhood and even family. Thank you to Cliff and our friends at REMAX for your dedicated support!

Rite Aid is Making an EPIC difference for kids

Published on April 29, 2013

This is part of a monthly series of "Miracle Memories", personal experiences shared by the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals staff. Rod Hamson, Account Director, speaks to Rite Aid’s current partnership with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Twentieth Century Fox for campaign of EPIC proportions.

This year’s Rite Aid fundraising campaign is truly making an EPIC difference for sick and injured kids at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Since 1994, Rite Aid and their associates have raised money for their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital by selling paper Miracle Balloon icons, hosting health fairs, yard sales, bowling tournaments, and even golf events which engage their vendors.

This year, Rite Aid is partnering with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Twentieth Century FOX in support of a new animated movie from the creators of Ice Age and Rio. EPIC will be in theaters May 24. All in-store promotional materials have been co-branded with Rite Aid and the movie.

During March and April, I was able to attend a few kick-off events at our hospitals. Being in a children’s hospital is one the best parts of my job. Our program directors dedicate so much time to our corporate partners and their enthusiasm and dedication to their hospital is evident during these kick-off events. I enjoy being with store managers and associates to show them how the funds they raise are being used and introduce them to a family that has benefitted from all the “asks” they make each day to their customers.

The EPIC theme for this year’s campaign has been exciting for the associates. Their customers have enjoyed the connection with the movie and associates who raised $300 during the first few weeks of the campaign are entered for a chance to attend the movie premiere.

I have visited Rite Aid stores this past month and have watched associates interact with customers—many on a first name basis—and ask if they would like to donate to their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Without much hesitation, if someone is asked to give, they will support a great cause.

Thank you, Rite Aid!

A Story with Heart and Love’s

Published on September 7, 2012

Love’s Travel Stops’ annual paper heart campaign runs all this month. The dollars customers donate to their local hospitals have very real effects. Here, a Love’s employee shares how funds hit home with the delivery of his newborn daughter.

Kirk Johnson is no stranger to Love’s Travel Stops annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising campaign. Kirk has worked for Love’s since 2001 and in, that time, he has seen his fair share of dollars raised for CMN Hospitals at Love’s locations nationwide. Kirk began his career at Love’s as an assistant manager, and today he is a district manager overseeing seven stores in the San Antonio, Texas, area.

Kirk knows what CMN Hospitals are all about from his experience with Love’s, but he had no idea that one day that funds raised during the campaign would directly benefit him and his loved ones someday.

Kirk and his wife, Nikki, were elated when they found out they would be having a baby girl, due in spring 2012. Excitement turned to fear when at just 23 weeks pregnant, Nikki was told that their baby had Turner syndrome and was given a three percent chance of surviving. At around 30 weeks the doctor saw that the ventricles in her brain were enlarged and ordered a fetal MRI to determine the cause. The MRI showed Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC), which is a fancy term to say she is missing the middle part of her brain that allows the two hemispheres to “talk” to each other.

“Although we knew we would love our little girl no matter what, we were scared of the unknown. What would her future hold? Would she ever be able to walk? Or talk? The waiting was the hardest part,” Nikki said.

Madeline Grace was born on March 7, 2012, at a children’s hospital in San Antonio and Nikki was only able to hold her princess for a few seconds before she was whisked away to the NICU. Turner syndrome carries a high risk of multiple medical conditions involving the heart and kidneys. As soon as she arrived to the NICU they ordered several tests of her heart, abdomen and head.

The next day after all the test results came back; the doctors said that she would need heart surgery because her aortic arch was too narrow. Madeline’s heart surgery was scheduled for the next week and she would have to remain in the NICU until then to receive a drug to keep her blood flowing easily until she could receive the surgery.

“The doctors were very good at explaining the process and what to expect. We kept our hopes up and tried only to focus on the positives. Even though we had a week to prepare, it is still terrifying to know your little girl was going to have surgery on her heart! The surgery team was very understanding and took the time to talk us through every step and called us from the operating room every hour to give us updates,” said Kirk.

Madeline came through the surgery like a champ and the next three weeks were spent recovering and getting her to eat. After much improvement, Madeline was finally able to come home and start growing like a weed!

“Madeline is a very happy curious little girl that we fall in love with more every day. Although we don’t know exactly what the future holds, we are excited to see all that Madeline will accomplish and so thankful that God chose us to be the parents of this amazing little fighter,” Nikki said.

“The doctors at the children’s hospital were not intimidated by our child’s three percent odds.  I think that as they get better technology the odds are going up for other children like ours.  If it were not for programs like CMN Hospitals providing new technology and skilled doctors, my daughter probably would not have made it.  Words can’t say how thankful we are for the help we received,” said Kirk.

Kirk said his experience has changed the way he looks at Love’s CMN Hospitals fundraising campaign. “I always knew it was a great cause, now I am emotionally tied to it for life. I hope I can share my story with the rest of the team this year and motivate them to raise even more donations for CMN hospitals. You never know when you might be the one who needs their help.”

Celebrating 20 years of saving and improving kids lives, here’s why REMAX agents say they give.

Children’s Miracle Network is grateful to our many corporate partners. Celebrating a 20 year partnership with REMAX we are inspired, encouraged and touched to hear personal and professional stories about why many REMAX agents choose to partner with us. Here is a snapshot of why agents give back to their local community through Children’s Miracle Network.

Our clients recognize our contribution, on their behalf, to
Children’s Miracle Network and are appreciative of it.  Virtually every
client we deal with has had some experience with our local children’s hospital
(CHEO), be it themselves as children, their children or grandchildren.
Our very own children and grandchildren have been patients at CHEO and have
received world-class treatment.

The Anne and Dwight Team, REMAX Metro-city realty ltd Ottawa, ON

Throughout my 34 year career in Real Estate, I have
always been involved in volunteerism and fundraising.  So, when I joined
REMAX six years ago, it seemed natural to me to become involved with
Children’s Miracle Network.  I was fortunate to have two healthy kids-not
kids anymore and it was unimaginable to me what some of these families endure
with their sick children.  Some have had to sell their homes to cover
medical expenses and travel and stay in strange cities so that they can be
near a hospital that will give them the appropriate care. These families inspire me to give.

Cliff Iverson of REMAX Crowne Real Estate, Regina, SK

About 16 yrs ago my nephew was born with a very clubbed foot
and was taken in as an infant to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) for
corrective surgery. His mother, my sister and all of us as you can imagine were
very worried about the prospect of her little boy being operated on at such a
young age.  Not Only did the team take incredible care of Austin, but we
were also very impressed with how they took care of the entire family. No
question or concern went unanswered and no fear was too small to be addressed.
Needless to say the operation was a complete success and as a young man today
Austin has full use of his feet today. I decided that day 16 years ago that I
would put my financial support into the SickKids and all the wonderful work
they do in changing and improving young lives every day. I am proud to hang the
“Miracle Home” sign rider on my For Sale signs and answer when asked “What does
that mean? “  It gives me another chance to share the story of my belief
in the wonderful work SickKids does !

Chris Owens, Broker REMAX Ability Real Estate Ltd.

On a personal level, my daughter spent a few days in
the Alberta Children’s Hospital recovering from a severe asthma attack a
few years back. The experience during that time confirmed to me without
reservation that the decision to support Children’s Miracle Network through the
REMAX Miracle Home program was the right one! I am forever grateful to my many
clients and friends who are the real reason why, while recovering at the
hospital those few years back, my daughter was able to have me walk her down to
the hallway where the donor wall is so she could see “Dad’s” name on
it!
