Kamerie's journey began when she was born prematurely, weighing 1 pound, 5 ounces. Because Kamerie needed intensive care, she immediately was transported to a neonatal intensive care unit at East Tennessee Children's Hospital her home for the next 384 days. It's where she survived pneumonia and a tracheotomy and underwent blood transfusions. During this time, caregivers supported Kamerie's family, showing them the intricacies and nuances of caring for a newborn with medical challenges, particularly during emergencies so they had the confidence to care for her at home. Kamerie was later diagnosed with Deletion Syndrome, a rage genetic disorder. The hospital continues to be a second home for her, as she continues to receive care.
