In 1983, four inspiring individuals came together to found Children’s Miracle Network. What began as a national telethon quickly became a powerful movement to support children’s hospitals and the families they serve.
Founders Marie Osmond, John Schneider, Mick Shannon, and Joe Lake united hospitals and supporters through storytelling and national visibility. Their vision was simple and powerful. Bring people, communities, and corporate partners together to support their local children’s hospitals.
Through the reach of the telethon and the generosity of millions of donors, the organization quickly grew into a national fundraising network dedicated to helping children receive the care they need close to home. Today, that founding vision continues to guide the work of Children’s Miracle Network, helping kids get the best care possible.
For more than 40 years, Children’s Miracle Network has raised nearly $10 billion, mostly $1 at a time. Our various partners and fundraising programs support our mission to Make Big Change For All Kids. Here are ways you can help:

Funds raised by Children’s Miracle Network support the local hospital. Those hospitals pay an annual membership fee to be part of the network, so donations through Children’s Miracle Network partners and programs benefit those local communities. When a donor gives to a Children’s Miracle Network program or partner, those donations help fund things like medical treatments, equipment and facilities at their local hospital to improve the lives of children and families in their communities.
Funds raised by Children’s Miracle Network are unrestricted and used by a local CMN hospital that best understand their communities’ most urgent needs. Whether that’s providing charitable care to children, investing in research that discovers life-saving treatments and cures, training the next generation of doctors and nurses, or offering families comfort and peace of mind during the most trying moments of their lives, member hospitals use Children’s Miracle Network’s funds where they are needed most. This is vital to children’s hospitals that frequently do not have other streams of unrestricted funds. Children’s hospitals’ funding needs vary greatly year over year. Each year, the greatest needs of a given hospital may be investments in a new, life-saving piece of equipment, or training and education of medical staff. The next year, there may be greater demand for pioneering research and treatments or providing care to patients who can’t otherwise afford it. Our unrestricted funds allow each hospital to be flexible to their most urgent needs today, while also planning for the needs of tomorrow.
Donations are vital to Make Big Change for all kids and redefining positive impact and outcomes for communities and redefining positive impact and outcomes for communities. Our collective efforts provide local hospitals with the critical funds they need.
Charitable Care
Last year alone, more than $54M funded patient care for children and families when they needed it most. These funds can support medical bills, travel assistance, home expenses, and beyond.
Education
Hospitals of Children’s Miracle Network provide education services for patients, families and the community. Last year alone, more than $29M funded their education initiatives ranging from car seat safety classes and community health and wellness programs to patients’ classroom needs. Education also includes services for hospital staff to best treat and prevent illnesses in children.
Patient Services
Quality care includes physical, mental and emotional health which are key to successful outcomes for patients and families. Services like child life are completely dependent on philanthropy and are critical roles within a children’s hospital. Art and pet therapy, counseling and outdoor gardens are a few additional examples. In 2022, more than $98M funded local patient care.
Advancement Services
When one child’s health issue is solved at one hospital, it can transform how that issue is handled across the world, benefiting more patients and protecting our collective future. More than $101M funded items like construction and capital expenditures that aim to advance treatment and care for children’s hospitals at large.
Equipment
Equipment at children’s hospitals must be customized to every child’s size and age, greatly multiplying the expenses incurred at children’s hospitals. In 2022, more than $109M funded equipment needs like giraffe beds and state-of-the-art pieces such as ECMO machinery and flash CT scanners.
Research
Children’s hospitals are changing the future of pediatric healthcare. With innovative, transformational research, they’re improving outcomes and treatments for patients regularly. Last year, more than $29m funded research efforts.
