At just 13 days old, Jeremiah’s cry suddenly changed. His breathing became labored, he stopped feeding and spiked a fever. His family rushed him to Boston Children’s Hospital, where tests revealed bacterial meningitis and coinciding sepsis, a life-threatening infection of the brain and spinal cord, especially dangerous for a newborn. He was moved to the intensive care unit, where his parents spent 18 days by his side. They couldn’t hold him because of the wires and monitors, but the care team kept them informed and optimistic through every step. Jeremiah’s life was saved by the extraordinary care he received.
His grateful parents brought him home at a month old with some hearing loss, but no neurological deficits. With early intervention and ongoing care from Boston Children’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, he’s now a thriving 7-year-old who excels in school, mentors younger students, is an avid fisherman and plays multiple sports. Jeremiah’s resilience continues to inspire his family and community every day
