Meet David

David seemed to be a healthy, thriving baby until his bilirubin levels spiked to a lifethreatening level just days after birth. He was urgently transferred to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, where the neonatal team performed two exchange transfusions within 24 hours to save his life, an extraordinary step beyond standard protocol. Despite a brain injury from the high bilirubin, David began therapies as an infant, later receiving a cochlear implant, treatment for cerebral palsy, and ongoing Botox injections to help reduce muscle tone. Over the years, he has undergone countless procedures and therapies, defying all expectations. Now 16, David is a high school sophomore with dreams of becoming a Department of Natural Resources officer. David continues to share his courage, resilience, and gratitude for the care that saved his life, advocating for kids just like him
