Meet Champion, Charlie

As a baby, Charlie’s parents noticed delayed motor skills, low muscle tone, and balance issues. After years of testing and referrals, whole-genome sequencing at Gundersen Health System revealed Charlie has Emery-Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy, a rare condition that affects muscle strength and mobility. Despite his diagnosis, Charlie faces challenges with humor, determination, and resilience. At Gundersen, he works with specialists to maintain his range of motion through stretching and exercises, while also receiving support at school. At home, equipment adaptations make daily life easier. Charlie loves reading, learning, and listening to classic rock. He also dreams of a career as an artist, podcaster, or a paleontologist. With his positivity and determination, Charlie continues to inspire his family, teachers, and care team, living proof that nothing can limit him or his imagination.
