Meet Eli
Eli’s journey at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital began before he was born, when doctors diagnosed him with a congenital heart defect in utero. From that moment, UCSF became a lifeline, guiding his family through uncertainty with compassion and expertise. He spent his first month of life in the hospital, where his care team not only addressed his complex needs but also supported his parents with meals, emotional care, and activities to help them cope. In the years that followed, Eli returned frequently for surgeries and followup care. UCSF staff always went above and beyond, transforming scary moments into comforting ones through Child Life projects, music therapy and visits from therapy dogs.
Today, nine-year-old Eli is thriving. Once expected to face athletic limitations, he plays soccer, swims, and even practices jiu-jitsu and MMA. His family is forever grateful for UCSF, where expert care and compassion gave Eli the chance to thrive.
