At 18 months old, JB was rushed to USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital after pulling open an oven door and suffering severe burns on his hands. His mom remembers the compassion of the care team, including a young doctor-in-training who shared her own burn story and reassured her that JB would be okay. JB spent 10 days in the hospital and underwent months of physical therapy to regain full use of his hands. Years later, at the age of 10, JB once again needed care at Children’s & Women’s. After returning from summer camp, he developed a high fever, rash, and mass on his neck. Specialists quickly diagnosed him with Kawasaki Syndrome, a rare inflammatory illness that can cause serious heart complications if untreated. JB recovered after a week of therapy and a year of cardiology follow-up. Today, JB is thriving, enjoying baseball, and looking forward to eighth grade.
