At her mom’s 20-week ultrasound, Jordyn was diagnosed with gastroschisis, a birth defect where the intestines develop outside the body. After being referred to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, her family prepared for a difficult journey.
Born at 35 weeks, she underwent surgery within 24 hours. At just seven days old, a second surgery repaired multiple blockages in a rare outcome. Jordyn recovered after a third surgery and grew into a thriving toddler. At the age of 3, Jordyn suddenly developed severe abdominal pain. At UM Health-Sparrow, her doctor was again on call when tests revealed a perforated bowel, obstruction, and kink in her intestines. Jordyn underwent emergency surgery and spent six days in the pediatric intensive care unit on a ventilator. After three weeks in the hospital, Jordyn went home. Now back to her joyful self, she continues to inspire her family and care team with her strength and resilience.
