Meet Kennedy
After a summer of unexplained health challenges, six-year-old Kennedy was rushed to the ER and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital – Toledo. There, she received a life-changing diagnosis: Type 1 diabetes. The endocrinology team surrounded Kennedy’s family with compassion and expertise, walking them through what the future would hold. The first days were filled with tears and uncertainty, but her care team never left their side. Educators provided tools and games to help Kennedy learn about her new reality, including a teddy bear named Rufus, who also has diabetes.
Rufus became both a comfort and a teacher, giving Kennedy courage to face her diagnosis. When she was discharged, Kennedy proudly gave Rufus rides in the butterfly wagon, her confidence shining through. Today, her team continues to guide her family through the ups and downs of managing diabetes, offering care, hope, and unconditional support.
