Meet Champion, Zakiyah

At just one year old, Zakiyah underwent her first eye surgery at Freeman Health System to clear clogged tear ducts. The procedure worked for a time, but the blockage returned, leading to a second surgery in which a stent was placed to help keep the duct open. While the intervention improved her condition, one eye became weaker than the other, resulting in amblyopia, a condition affecting visual development. She still has a clogged tear duct, and her care team continues to monitor her progress. Another surgery may be needed in the future to protect her vision. Through every step, Zakiyah has faced her treatments with resilience. Her medical journey has been supported by a dedicated care team ensuring she has the best chance at a healthy future.
